I am taking time off to have my first baby and to spend some time at home with our little one. I will begin to doula again in late 2008. Happy Birthing! Every woman has an innate strength and ability to give birth. I believe birth is a natural, normal event that can also be one of the most empowering experiences of a woman's life. My goal is to help you (and your partner) to trust your instincts and body along the way—and of course, to bring a healthy baby into this world! I have experience supporting moms and their partners through natural birth, water birth, epidural births, C-sections, bed rest, and twin births. No matter how you choose to bring your baby into this world, I will support your informed choices and bring a positive, confident, and calm energy into your experience, whether at the hospital or at home. Prior to becoming a doula, I worked as a journalist and photographer, spending time with all kinds of people throughout the world and learning their stories. I am inspired by the various journeys we're all on—pregnancy and birth have always called to me as the most sacred and inspiring of all. I moved to St. Paul in 2006 after spending time in South Africa as a volunteer for an organization that mentors HIV-positive pregnant women and new mothers. My first birth was in Cape Town, and the experience of supporting this mother through the birth of her first child was transformative! I finished my doula training through DONA in March 2007 and completed my certification requirements in August. I typically meet with you two or three times prenatally, in your home. We will talk about what you hope for your birth, any fears or concerns you or your partner may have, and explore what labor and birth mean to you. We’ll also talk about and/or practice relaxation techniques, visualization, breathing, massage, and labor positions. Once you go into labor, I will join you either at home or at the hospital (your preference), and I will stay with you and support you throughout your entire labor and birth. I'll also keep track of key moments during your labor and delivery and write your birth story for you. (I encourage you to write down your own memories and thoughts, too!) If you would like me to take pictures or prenatal portraits, I'm happy to do that as well. We will also meet once postpartum so we can process your birth experience, talk about how you and your newly expanded family are adjusting, and to make sure you’re aware of any extra resources or help you may need.
