Certifications and qualifications: registered nurse, certified nurse-midwife

My name is Ann Simonsen Oswood, and I am a certified nurse-midwife and the mother of three children. Although teaching and caring for pregnant women is my passion, I am currently taking time off from paid employment to be a full-time mother. I joined the Childbirth Collective in 2002, and have found it fascinating to be part of such a diverse group of people, all of whom share a devotion to the well-being of birthing women. I am pleased to serve as the current president of this organization.

I believe that women have much greater capability and strength than they often believe they do, and that the season of childbearing is a wonderful and fertile time to help women realize this potential. It is for this reason that pregnancy and birth education is a joy for me. Being with women during this tender and influential time is truly a privilege, and I am grateful for the many opportunities I have had to share this moment with families.

I have been a registered nurse since 1989 and a nurse-midwife since 1993. In those capacities I have had the privilege of caring for women and children from a wide variety of backgrounds and in many different circumstances: well and ill, in times of joy and times of stress, in hospitals and clinics and schools, and in a number of places across the country.

In addition to my work with the Childbirth Collective, I am active in the local chapter of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, and am a member of the International Childbirth Education Association. I also have an interest in breastfeeding support and education, and am a member of LaLeche League.
