I am a grateful mother of three adult daughters, three son-in-laws, and Grammy to four beautiful grandchildren, including twins. Five years ago before boarding the plane, I hugged my daughter goodbye after a week of caring for her and her newborn daughter. She said, "Mom, you are so awesome at this, you ought to be a doula". As an educator for over 30 years, I was ready for a change. My daughters and grandchildren are the inspiration for my retirement from teaching to become a postpartum doula. I love my work and feel honored to help new mothers rest, heal, and bond with their precious infants. Supporting new mothers and families of newborns is my contribution to world peace. Since 2001 I have provided services for 145+ families in the Twin Cities and DC Metro Areas in a variety of circumstances: prenatal bed rest care; household/nursery organization; mother/newborn care; cesarean recovery; multiples (25 sets of twins); same-sex couples, adoption, premature/high-need infants; apnea monitoring; breast and bottle feeding; sibling support; mothers experiencing postpartum depression and psychosis; days and overnights. In addition to the above, I've walked dogs, ran errands, accompanied moms to pediatrician visits, addressed announcements, and hung pictures--anything to facilitate a calming atmosphere for new mothers. I offer a non-judgmental, gentle and intuitive approach coupled with a sense of humor and host of life experiences. Perhaps they say it best: "Thanks for all the great care, instruction, and love." "You understand babies so well and are a great teacher. Thank you for giving me the confidence that I need to be a good mother to the twins." "What a gift you were to me during the first days of my motherhood and healing after a Cesarean. You helped show me and guide me so I could do it on my own." "You are so intuitive with babies. Thank you for the peaceful overnights with our twins." "Your helpfulness and gentle way have been invaluable to us." |
