I am a mother to 3 young girls. I had my first baby in 2000 and was advised by a friend to hire a doula. While I did not, at the time, entirely understand the value of a doula I trusted my friend who seemed to know what she was talking about. 3 births later, I would never go through labor without the invaluable support of a doula! I have personal experience with symphysis pubis, long, prodromal labor, unmedicated birth, water birth, significant trauma/injury caused by baby's position during delivery, difficulty with breastfeeding and extended breastfeeding. The experience of my doula-attended births has inspired me to become a doula. For me, the birth of each of my children was a transformational, positive experience. In large part, I believe that my experience was positive because I had the support of my doula. As a doula, I hope to provide the physical and emotional support necessary to keep my clients connected to themselves, their partners and their newborns before, during and after labor. I believe that in keeping women connected to themselves and those whom they love the most, that positive outcomes occur for the mother and her newborn family. As your doula, I meet with you 2-3 times prior to your birth, attend your labor/delivery and make 1-2 postpartum visits. I am currently working on my birth doula certification through DONA and will have completed the bulk of my training by the end of the fall 2005. While I am not certified as a postpartum doula, I am happy to do postpartum work as well that includes house cleaning, grocery shopping, child care and various other jobs to help your family transition smoothly.
I have a Masters Degree in Social Work and have about 10 years experience working with both children and families of all different races, ethnicities and sexual orientation. I also have experience with high risk families, adoptive families and drug exposed children.
This is such a sacred time in the life of your family! As someone who has, myself, invited a doula to support me as a laboring woman and a new mother, I can only say that words cannot begin describe how invaluable the support of a doula can be. My wish for you is that you find that doula who you feel, for whatever reason, connected to and have the best birth experience that you can have!
